Jakarta. The police said an organization calling itself the National Movement to Guard the Fatwas of the Indonesian Ulema Council, or GNPF-MUI, might attempt to stage a coup during a mass protest rally planned for Friday (25/11).
The group demands the arrest of inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who was named a suspect in a blasphemy case.
National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday the group's name is confusing and it should not use the MUI for its own goals.
"If they want to protest, they should say who they are and what they want," he said.
According to Rikwanto, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian is of the opinion that the group, which uses the blasphemy case against Ahok as justification for Friday's rally, might be planning to stage a coup.
"The police chief said there were indications that there might be a coup attempt during the protest. [The claim] is based on verified information," Rikwanto said.
He added that the police are currently gathering more information on the matter.
"If it confirms that there are indeed plans for a coup, we will act," he added.
Rikwanto said the police have not yet received any applications for a protest permit.
