Politics Dominates Top Stories at the Jakarta Globe for 2014

JANUARY 02, 2015

Jakarta. Political news dominated the list of most-read stories on the Jakarta Globe's website in 2014 as Joko Widodo narrowly beat Prabowo Subianto to become Indonesia's seventh president.

Desi Anwar's column on losing presidential candidate Prabowo — just as he filed for a review of the election results with the Constitutional Court on July 25 — was the most-read story last year. Prabowo's call on global leaders to withhold congratulating Joko was also among the most popular.

The public caning of a woman in Aceh for allegedly having an extramarital affair, when in fact she was gang raped, was the second most-viewed story of last year.
Among other big stories was the shutdown of Jakarta's Stadium nightclub and the government's ban of the Islamic State in Indonesia.
