Power Cut Across Jakarta, Tangerang as Transformer Catches Fire

SEPTEMBER 02, 2015

Jakarta. Large swaths of Jakarta and Tangerang were left without electricity for several hours on Wednesday afternoon after a fire at a transformer substation, state power company PLN said.

"PLN would like to apologize for the inconvenience that our customers experienced in some areas in Jakarta and Tangerang," Koesdianto, a spokesman for the company, said in a statement.

He said the power failure was caused by a fire that broke out at an interbus transformer (IBT) responsible for distributing electricity to other power stations, in Kembangan, West Jakarta, cutting the electricity supply. It took dozens of firefighters and 30 fire trucks a total of three hours to put out the blaze.

The blackout started at 11:13 a.m., affecting several parts of West Jakarta, including Kedoya, Kampung Gondrong, Ciledug, Kembangan, Kebon Jeruk, Meruya, Cipondoh, Poris Indah, Daan Mogot, Cipulir, Kebayoran Lama, Joglo, Permata Hijau and Gandaria City.

The blackout also hit the Tangerang areas of Alam Sutera, Curug, Gading Serpong, Legok, Karawaci, Cikupa, Pasar Kemis, Jatiuwung and Tiga Raksa.

The shortage caused traffic lights to stop working, exacerbating traffic congestion in the affected areas. It also disrupted mobile phone services by Telkomsel and XL Axiata, the country's two biggest carriers.

Power was restored from around 3 p.m.
