Prabowo Calls on Supporters to Abide by the Law

MAY 23, 2019

Jakarta. Failing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto tweeted a video late on Wednesday evening, calling on his supporters to abide by the law and avoid expressing their aspirations by violence.

Meanwhile, in front of the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) building in Central Jakarta, his supporters were involved in more tense cat-and-mouse games with security officers.

The video was the second statement Prabowo made on Wednesday. He also delivered a similar call from his home in South Jakarta in the afternoon.

In the video, Prabowo ordered his supporters to stop protesting on the street and return home.

"I'm calling on [all of] you to go home. Avoid doing anything illegal. Always abide by the law," he said.

Prabowo's supporters have been involved in violent clashes with security officers in the past two days, as they took their protest at President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's re-election to the streets of the capital.

As of Wednesday evening, police have arrested 257 rioters from three locations in Central and West Jakarta where Prabowo’s supporters clashed with police.

More clashes occurred in front of the Bawaslu building early on Thursday morning, as a large group of protesters threw rocks and firecrackers at riot police officers, who retaliated by firing tear gas.

"We must remember the public interest. I ask you to keep calm and be patient. I [also] call on security officers to restrain themselves. We are looking for the best solution for this country," Prabowo said.

President Jokowi on Wednesday said that as the leader of the country he must ensure security and political stability.

"I do not tolerate anyone who disturbs security, who undermines the democratic process and who will disrupt unity in the country we love so much. Especially rioters," he said.

"We will not give any room to rioters, who will damage our country, who will damage the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," Jokowi said.
