Jakarta. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Pramono Anung says he was surprised at being nominated by PDI-P Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri to run in the 2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election. Pramono revealed that he had never anticipated nor requested the nomination, but now that it is an official decision, he is committed to carrying out the responsibility.

"I didn't expect it, didn't ask for it, and never hoped for it, but now that it has been decided, I will work earnestly and strive hard to fulfill this mandate," Pramono said in a social media post on his account, @pramonoanungw, on Wednesday.

Pramono also urged his supporters to wear white when he and Rano Karno register at the Jakarta Election Commission (KPU) on Tuesday, with registration scheduled for around 11:00 a.m. Jakarta time.

PDI-P has officially endorsed Pramono Anung and Rano Karno as candidates in the 2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election.

Pramono Anung Wibowo was born on June 11, 1963, in Kediri, East Java. He completed his undergraduate degree in mining engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), earned a master’s degree in management from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and obtained a doctorate in political communication from Padjajaran University.

Throughout his academic journey, Pramono was actively involved in various organizations and even served as the chairman of the ITB Mining Engineering Student Association.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Pramono quickly entered the workforce, securing roles in several mining and oil companies. By the age of 25, he had already become a director at Tanito Harum. His corporate career peaked when he served as a commissioner at Yudhistira Haka Perkasa from 1996 to 1999.

Pramono’s political career began when he joined PDIP, where he was appointed deputy secretary-general of the party’s central leadership board in 2000. In 2005, he became a close aide to Megawati Soekarnoputri, serving as PDIP's secretary-general.

He also served as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from 1999 to 2004. During the 2009-2014 term, Pramono was appointed deputy speaker of the DPR, working alongside Marzukie Alie. Although he was re-elected for the 2014-2019 term, he did not complete it, as President Joko Widodo appointed him as cabinet secretary.

Pramono Anung held the cabinet secretary position for two consecutive terms during President Jokowi's administration, serving from 2014 to 2019 and from 2019 to 2024.
