Predawn Flooding Expected in Jakarta on Thursday: BNPB
Jakarta. Flooding may occur in several parts of Jakarta in the early hours of Thursday (16/02) as the Ciliwung River is expected to burst its banks, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, said.
The Katulampa Dam, which regulates the amount of water flowing to Jakarta from parts of West Java, is likely to overflow after heavy rains in Depok and surrounding areas.
"We expect the floodwaters to reach the Manggarai Water Gate in Jakarta by 1.20 a.m. on Thursday," BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.
Areas likely to be affected include Srengseng Sawah, Rawajati, Kalibata, Pengadegan, East Pejaten, Kebon Baru and Bukit Duri in South Jakarta, as well as Balekambang, Cililitan, Cawang, Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to move their valuables to safer places, Sutopo said.
