President Awaits National Police Chief's Proposal for Next Counterterrorism Agency Chief
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is expected to appoint the new National Conterterrorism Agency, or BNPT, chief to replace Gen. Tito Karnavian, the freshly inaugurated National Police chief.
Tito was inaugurated by Jokowi at the State Palace on Wednesday (13/07), replacing retiring chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, a month after his nomination was approved by the House of Representatives.
The former Jakarta Police chief, whose sole candidacy was proposed by the president in mid-June, will shortly propose his replacement for BNPT helm to the president through Chief Security Minister Luhut Pandjaitan.
"He can no concurrently hold the two posts," Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Jokowi will then submit Tito's proposal to the final assessment team, which would return investigation results to the president.
"Once there is an official proposal from the National Police chief, the process of replacement for the BNPT chief will certainly commence," Pramono said.
The BNPT is largely tasked with arranging national policies and strategies to counter terrorism throughout the country, which has become increasingly important following attacks in Bandung, Jakarta and Solo.
