President Jokowi Condemns Assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh

Jakarta .President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has strongly condemned the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran, on Wednesday. Jokowi denounced the violence and emphasized that such actions within Iran's sovereign territory are unacceptable.
"It is an act of violence and murder that cannot be tolerated, and it occurred within Iran's sovereign territory," Jokowi said after opening the Indonesian Digital Economy and Creative Works Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday.
"I believe everyone, including Indonesia, condemns such violence and murder," he added.
Hamas confirmed that Haniyeh was killed in a predawn airstrike in Tehran. The group has accused Israel of orchestrating the assassination, which has heightened fears of escalating regional conflict. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed revenge, declaring it a duty and stating that Israel has "prepared a harsh punishment for itself" by killing "a dear guest in our home."
The killing of Haniyeh has provoked widespread international condemnation. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas described the action as cowardly and dangerous, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized it as a malicious attempt to undermine the Palestinian struggle and resistance in Gaza.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov condemned the incident as a politically motivated murder that is wholly unacceptable and likely to exacerbate tensions. Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also labeled the killing as a dangerous escalation and a clear violation of international and humanitarian law that undermines peace efforts.
A White House spokesperson mentioned there was "no sign that an escalation is imminent" in the Middle East and that a cease-fire in Gaza remains possible. The U.S. has not confirmed reports of the Tehran incident, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating that the U.S. was not involved in or aware of the killing.
Israel generally does not comment on operations by its intelligence agency, Mossad. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel is preparing for all possibilities but did not address the Haniyeh killing directly.
