President Jokowi Says Mother Dies From Cancer

MARCH 26, 2020

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo confirmed on Wednesday that his mother, Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, has died from cancer during treatment at a hospital in Solo, Central Java.

"At 4.45 this afternoon, our mother Sudjiatmi Notomiharjo, passed away after battling cancer and took medication for the last four years," the president said at his mother's residence in Solo.

The president said his mother was once taken to the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Jakarta for treatment before returning to her hometown.

His spokesman, Fadjroel Rachman, said in Jakarta that the president has asked all state officials to refrain from attending the funeral in Solo scheduled for Thursday. The family has requested for no public visitation.

The government is currently campaigning for social distancing and restricting public gatherings in the country’s fight against the spread of coronavirus.

"Based on a directive from President Joko Widodo, the funeral ceremony will involve family members only. All the cabinet members and their staffs have been asked to remain in Jakarta and focus on their jobs," Fadjroel said. He stopped short of linking the directive with the coronavirus-related measures.

However, State Secretary Pratikno and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung will accompany the president during the funeral, he said.

On his Twitter account, the president wrote: "I request your prayers at a distance."

She is survived by her eldest son Jokowi and three daughters Iit Sriyantini, Titik Relawati and Ida Yati.
