President Jokowi's Mother Passes Away at 77

Jakarta. Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, the mother of Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, passed away in the Central Java town of Solo on Wednesday. She was 77.

The news was confirmed by the presidential secretariat, which said the president had immediately flown to his hometown.

"Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, the mother of President Joko Widodo, passed away in Solo on Wednesday, March 25, at 4.45 p.m.," the presidential secretariat's press bureau said in a statement.

The president arrived in Solo later in the afternoon, it said.

Sudjiatmi died after being treated at the Slamet Riyadi Hospital in Solo, according to Budi Arie Setiadi, the deputy for the villages, disadvantaged regions and transmigration minister.

Sujiatmi has four children from her marriage with Widjiatno. Jokowi is their eldest son. The president's younger sisters are Iit Sriyantini, Titik Relawati and Ida Yati.

Indonesians soon swarmed Twitter to express their condolences.

"My deepest condolence to the passing of Madame Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, the mother of President Jokowi. May Allah lift her soul to a better place and ease the family through this difficult time," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan tweeted.

The hashtag #SujiatmiNotomiharjo trended as people used it to tweet their prayers. Among them are former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, media mogul Hary Tanoesoedibjo and celebrity lawyer Ruhut Sitompul.
