MAY 22, 2019

Jakarta. The Central Jakarta Police chief has urged the coordinators of the May 22 protest rally on Wednesday evening to take action after some members of the crowd started throwing various objects at police officers guarding the area in front of the offices of the Election Supervisory Agency, or Bawaslu, in Central Jakarta.

Chief Comr. Hari Kurniawan said riot police have been in a defensive position, while protestors keep throwing rocks and firecrackers at them.

"Don't throw [anything] at us; we are also part of Indonesian society," he told a crowd of about 500 protestors.

Rioting also broke out in West Jakarta when a group of protestors traveling from the direction of Banten Province confronted police and pelted them with rocks and firecrackers, and setting fire to various items in the street.

Their affiliation was not clear, but they also tried to make their way to the Bawaslu offices.

Crowds in front of both Central Jakarta and Petamburan in West Jakarta also refused to disperse.

Prabowo Subianto, who failed in his bid for the presidency in the April 17 election, has urged his supporters to refrain from violent acts during their protest of the result.
