Jakarta. Police in the capital have warned Jakartans to avoid the city center on Tuesday as more than 50,000 workers are expected to gather at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle and from there walk to the State Palace.
Officers will temporarily redirect traffic when necessary, closing vehicle access to the HI roundabout and the State Palace, the Jakarta Police said in a statement.
"Drivers should avoid these areas so that they don't get stuck in traffic," said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. M. Iqbal.
The police will also close a section of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman — between the roundabout and Jalan Teluk Betung — as well as Jalan Imam Bonjol and Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara.
Police expect workers will start to gather at the roundabout from around 8 a.m.
The demonstration, to demand better pensions and a increase in the minimum wage, among several other requests, will last until 6 p.m., Iqbal said.
