Salatiga, Central Java. A retired district leader in Central Java was shocked on Thursday when he received credit card bills totaling Rp 103 million ($6,359) despite never having owned a credit card.

Suroso Ucok Kuncoro, former head of Sidomukti district in Salatiga, said he was informed by a state bank that he had been registered as a credit card holder since February 7, 2021.

His unpaid bills were an accumulation of spending over 999 days.

“On that particular day, I contracted Covid-19 and was put in isolation, so it’s unlikely that I went to the bank to apply for a credit card,” Suroso said at his residence in Salatiga on Friday.

Suroso, who served as district head from 2000 to 2002, retired as a civil servant in 2009.

“After my retirement, I worked as a legal officer at PT Tripilar, and that’s when I opened a Bank Mandiri account because the company used the bank’s payroll service,” he added.

Upon receiving the credit card bills, Suroso went to the bank’s local branch to seek clarification.

According to Suroso, the bank insisted that he owed the debt and refused to provide him with the spending records, prompting him to hire a lawyer over suspicions of a personal data breach.

His attorney, Handrianus Handyar Rhaditya, said a formal letter has been sent to the bank demanding clarification about the unexpected credit card issuance.

If the bank doesn’t reply within three days, Suroso will file a complaint with the police because bank customer data “must not be leaked or misused,” the lawyer said.

Bank Mandiri has not yet responded to the allegation.
