Riot Breaks Out at Brimob Prison Near Jakarta
Jakarta. A riot between prisoners and police broke out on Tuesday (08/05) at the Police Mobile Brigade, or Brimob, prison near Jakarta, where several people have been injured, a police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday morning.
"I can confirm that there was an incident inside Brimob headquarters […] There was an allegation that several prisoners fought with officers," Brig. Gen. M. Iqbal, a National Police spokesman, told journalists at Brimob headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java.
He said police used soft and other approaches to control the situation, though the riot is ongoing.
"I cannot give you more details on the event yet […] but as of 1 a.m. this morning, no one has died," Iqbal said.
Police have not confirmed yet whether the rioters are convicted terrorists or prisoners convicted on other charges.
Former Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama is also serving his sentence within the same compound, after being convicted of blasphemy last year. No information has been made available regarding his current condition.
Efforts are ongoing to control the situation on the ground.
