Rock Star Ahmad Dhani Reported to Police After Insulting President Jokowi

NOVEMBER 07, 2016

Jakarta. Ahmad Dhani, rock star and deputy governor candidate in the Bekasi, West Java, district election, has been reported to police for allegedly insulting President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo during Friday's (04/11) massive rally protesting Jakarta's governor.

During the rally against Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama for alleged blasphemy, Dhani allegedly insulted the president while addressing the crowd.

Projo and Laskar Rakyat Jakarta, two volunteer groups who campaigned for Jokowi during the 2014 presidential elections, filed the report Sunday afternoon.

"We, as citizens, feel disturbed and think it is necessary to report Ahmad Dhani so he can take responsibility for his statements. As Jokowi volunteers, we are offended by Dhani's poor public speaking," Riano Oscha, chairman of Laskar Rakyat Jakarta, said at the Jakarta Police Office in South Jakarta.

Dhani has been accused of insulting the head of state in public, which under Criminal Code Procedure could see him jailed for 18 months.

“We have submitted the video and audio recording as evidence. We will also prepare several witnesses from the Friday's rally,” said Riano.
