Ronald Tannur Rearrested for Girlfriend’s Death

Jakarta. Prosecutors rearrested Gregorius Ronald Tannur on Sunday after the Supreme Court convicted him of aggravated assault that led to the death of his girlfriend Dini Sera Afrianti last year in a case that has gained national attention.
“Ronald Tannur was arrested at a house in Victoria Regency Complex, Surabaya, at 2.40 p.m. today," Attorney General’s Office spokesman Harli Siregar said in a text message. “He is now in the custody of the East Java Prosecutors’ Office. The arrest followed the guilty verdict from the Supreme Court.”
Ronald was initially acquitted of murder and aggravated assault charges by the judges at the Surabaya District Court in July. They argued that the woman died from consuming too much alcohol and that Ronald had no malicious intent of killing her, despite video evidence showing Ronald ramming his car into Dini at a parking lot in Surabaya.
The panel also ordered prosecutors to release Ronald immediately.
While filing an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office secretly launched an investigation into the judges.
On October 23, the AGO announced they had arrested the three judges -- Erintuah Damanik, Mangapul, and Heru Hanindyo -- along with Ronald’s defense lawyer, Lisa Rahmat, on bribery charges. Searches of their residences in Surabaya, Semarang, and Jakarta turned up banknotes totaling over Rp 20 billion ($1.3 million). Prosecutors allege that the judges received bribes from Ronald’s lawyer in exchange for his acquittal.
Following these arrests, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal, sentencing Ronald to five years for aggravated assault, rather than murder.
Two days later, the AGO announced the arrest of a former Supreme Court official identified as Zarof Ricar for allegedly taking bribe money from the defense team to influence justices in the hope that the acquittal ruling was upheld during the appeal proceedings.
Zarof, who retired from the Supreme Court in 2022, is accused of taking Rp 5 billion from the lawyer to be distributed among the three justices who handled the case and himself.
However, a search at Zarof’s private residence in Jakarta discovered Rp 920 billion ($58.8 million) in cash and 51 kilograms of gold bars, which prosecutors linked to his past corrupt conduct while serving at the Supreme Court.
It remains unclear if prosecutors will pursue corruption charges against Zarof in relation to the money and gold findings.
