Jakarta. The Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Dr. Bimanesh Sutarjo to three years' imprisonment on Monday (16/07) for obstruction of justice in a graft investigation against his patient, Setya Novanto.
The court ruled that he colluded with Setya's lawyer, Fredrich Yunadi, to help the politician evade arrest after he had failed to comply with several summonses by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Bimanesh, who worked as a doctor at Medika Permata Hijau Hospital in West Jakarta at the time, granted Fredrich's request in November last year to admit Setya to the hospital and agreed to manipulate his medical records.
Fredrich was sentenced to seven years in prison on similar charges last month.
"The court rules that Bimanesh Sutarjo is found guilty of corruption and obstructing an investigation into a graft case. He is hereby sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rp 150 million [$10,400]. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional month in prison," Judge Mahfudin said, as quoted by state-run news agency Antara.
Prosecutors initially demanded six years' imprisonment, but the court took the doctor's professional background and lack of previous convictions into consideration.
The court granted the prosecution and the defense a week to decide whether they want to appeal the verdict.
Setya, a former House of Representatives speaker, was jailed for 15 years in April for his role in a high-profile graft case involving the procurement of electronic identity documents, or e-KTP, which resulted Rp 2.3 trillion in state losses.
