Sports Ministry Asks PSSI to Move Chairmanship Election to Yogya

SEPTEMBER 13, 2016

Jakarta. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has called on the Indonesian Football Association, or PSSI, to move the venue of its October chairmanship election to Yogyakarta, as it would be a neutral location for all candidates.

The national football governing body earlier said that it had chosen the South Sulawesi city of Makassar to host the upcoming congress to elect new leaders.

However, the Sports Ministry does not consider Makassar as a neutral location, considering that one of candidates, Erwin Aksa, originates from there.

In addition, former PSSI chairman La Nyalla Matalitti – who is currently standing trial for graft – also has close connections to the city where the iconic football club PSM Makassar is based.

The Sports Ministry will grant permission for the congress only if the PSSI moves the venue to Yogyakarta, where the federation was established.

A letter containing these requirements was issued by Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi on Friday (09/09).

"We want to push for a total reform, and we see Yogyakarta as the place [for the PSSI] to start from scratch," Imam told reporters at the Century Park Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday. "But please don't blow up this case as this is just a technical issue."

The minister is currently waiting for a response from the PSSI regarding the change of venue.
