Surabaya Mayor Rushed to Hospital for Exhaustion

JUNE 27, 2019

Jakarta. Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the city's Soetomo Hospital after being rushed to the emergency room for exhaustion and an asthma attack.

The energetic mayor, known for her strong work ethic, was transferred to the hospital after being admitted to the emergency unit at Soewandhie Hospital on Tuesday. Her condition is now stable.

Soetomo Hospital spokesman Pesta Parulian said the mayor is recovering nicely in intensive care.

"We've assigned 15 doctors to aid her recovery, including internists, heart surgeons and pathologists," Pesta said in a press conference at the hospital on Thursday.

Surabaya administration representative Armudji said there will be no interruption to government services while Ibu Risma, the mayor's popular nickname, is laid low at the hospital.

"Ibu Risma already has contingency plans set in place. The city can practically run by itself," he said on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The head of Surabaya's health department Febria Rachmanita said Risma was exhausted after a trip overseas and that she complained of stomach pain and difficulty breathing on Tuesday.

The mayor of Indonesia's second largest city is famous for her innovative and sometimes controversial policies, such as the closure of Dolly in 2014, at that time the biggest red-light district in Southeast Asia.
