Sutiyoso Suitable to Replace Sports Minister Imam, Says Labor Party Chairman
Jakarta. Labor Party chairman Sonny Pudji Sasono said on Friday (14/07) that Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi is likely to be replaced due to financial mismanagement in recent years as President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo looks to reshuffle his cabinet.
"I reckon the president was very angry when noticing that the Ministry of Sports received another disclaimer from the Supreme Audit Agency [BPK] last May. Do we really need to keep its minister?" Sonny said.
"Compared to other ministries, this organization [the Sports Ministry] has been left behind."
Sony, considered one of Labor's most prominent politicians, offered up retired army general Sutiyoso as a competent replacement for Imam.
"I see Sutiyoso as very suitable to replace Imam," Sonny said.
"His past experience in sports, particularly in badminton and football, can tell you that he is a good candidate," he added.
Sutiyoso is well liked by Persija Jakarta fans due to his role as trustee for the club during his tenure as governor from 1997-2007. He also chaired the Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI) from 2004-2008, a time of transformation and regeneration.
"Sutiyoso was appointed as an intelligence chief by Jokowi, so I could see him being successful in driving Indonesia to the important event next year, the Asian Games," Sonny added.
Sutiyoso was replaced from his post as the state intelligence agency chief in September last year. He was replaced by Budi Gunawan, who previously held a post as a deputy chief for the National Police.
