Swedish Adventurers Evacuated from Erupting Mount Lewotobi

Kupang. On Wednesday, two Swedish travelers aged 38 and 34 were evacuated by a search and rescue (SAR) team from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara.
The duo, identified only by their first names --Henning and Alex--, were found camping on the slopes of the active volcano, which experienced three eruptions on the same day.
The daring pair came to the attention of a collaborative search and rescue (SAR) team, comprised of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Sikka branch, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), while on their routine patrol. The two foreigners were within the hazardous zone affected by the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption.
At the time of discovery, they were setting up their camping tent just 500 meters away from the edge of the flowing hot lava, heading towards Nurabelen Village in the Ile Bura District of East Flores Regency.
Upon arrival, Basarnas personnel swiftly evacuated the two foreign nationals from the dangerous area.
"Fortunately, one of the two foreign nationals could speak Indonesian, so we immediately directed them to pack up and leave the location," said Rizwan Dwi Putra, the Commander of the Maumere Basarnas Team, on Thursday.
He said that the camping site chosen by the two Swedes fell within the prohibited activity zone, as it was within a 4-kilometer radius from the erupting center of Mount Lewotobi. Being in such proximity to the lava flow and hot volcanic ash is dangerous to tourists.
"The distance between the tent and the edge of the hot lava flow is very close, only about 500 meters, and that is very dangerous for them," he added.
As of now, the two Swedish tourists have been safely evacuated to Maumere, Sikka Regency.
