Jakarta. A teenage girl was killed and another seriously injured after they were struck by an incoming train while taking selfies on a rail bridge in Central Java, local media reported.

State train operator KAI said Nur Afifah, 16, and her friend Eliatun Nofikah were crossing the Sakalibel rail bridge in Bumiayu in Brebes district of Central Java at 10.38 a.m. on Saturday (13/03). Midway, the pair decided to take selfies.

The pair, the KAI said, either failed to notice the incoming passenger train completely or failed to get to safety in time.

“As a result, Nur Afifah died at the scene while Eliatun Nofikah sustained injuries to her head and left arm and is receiving treatment at the Bumiayu Public Hospital,” KAI spokesman Surono said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Surono said the incident served as a reminder for people not to trespass or use cross bridges, which are off limit for pedestrians.
