Jakarta. Jakarta deputy governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Tuesday (04/10) that Teman Ahok — a volunteer group for governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama's aborted independent run in next year's Jakarta election — has been included in the official Ahok-Djarot volunteers team submitted to the electoral commission earlier this week.
Teman Ahok managed to collect more than a million signatures of support for Ahok to run as an independent in next year’s governor race, but the incumbent governor decided to cancel the plan apparently due to difficult requirements for an independent nomination.
"Teman Ahok was registered as part of our volunteer group to the Jakarta Election Commission (KPUD). They are still involved in our campaign team. They're very good at making creative campaigns," Djarot said at City Hall on Tuesday evening.
Teman Ahok spokesman Amalia Ayuningtyas said the volunteer group will start a new campaign called #TetapAhok, or "Always Ahok."
The volunteer group will support the Ahok-Djarot team by creating a host of digital and creative campaigns, Amalia said.
Teman Ahok will continue to sell a range of merchandise to collect funding for Ahok and Djarot. "We want to keep the strong sense of public participation in our campaign, which we've had since the Teman Ahok days. We have consulted with the KPUD on keeping the whole process open and transparent," Amalia said.
Jakarta City Council Speaker Prasetio Edi Marsudi had already been appointed as the campaign manager for the Ahok-Djarot team, which has earned the backing of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the Golkar Party, the National Democratic Party (NasDem) and the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura).
Democratic Party lawmaker Ruhut Sitompul and celebrity Sophia Latjuba have also been included in the Ahok-Djarot campaign team.
Djarot said Ahok-Djarot's ex-campaign manager, Nusron Wahid, was not included in the team to avoid conflicts of interest since he is also the chairman of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection and Placement Agency (BNP2TKI). "But he is still part of the Golkar Party’s internal campaign team," he said.
