Three Bodies Evacuated From Landslide-Hit Hotel in Cipanas
Cianjur, West Java. Rescuers evacuated three bodies trapped beneath the rubble of a hotel in the resort area of Cipanas more than 24 hours after it was hit by a devastating landslide on Wednesday morning (09/03).
Rescuers first discovered the body of Bun Santoso, 35, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, search and rescue official Sutrisno said, pinned beneath the rubble. Between 11.30 a.m. and 12 p.m. rescuers discovered the bodies of Budi Tanuadi, 52, and his wife Meilanawati, 52, inside their room.
Heavy rain, which lasted from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning, triggered a landslide bringing down a 60-meter cliff behind the Club Bali Hotel in Cianjur, West Java at 12:30 a.m.
The landslide also knocked down a five-meter water tank made of concrete that slammed into several rooms, trapping a dozen hotel guest beneath the rubble.
A joint rescue team consisting of officers from the National Police, Indonesian Military (TNI), National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) managed to evacuate the majority of the trapped victims on Wednesday, including three children.
The surviving victims are now receiving medical treatment for their injuries at the nearby Cimacan general hospital.
All of the victims, including the three dead evacuated on Thursday, are believed to be from Jakarta, a two-hour drive away.
