Padang. Three newly-elected members of a local legislative council in West Sumatra were arrested during a "meth party" at a hotel in the provincial capital, Padang, police said on Monday.

A private citizen who was with the councilors in the hotel room was also taken into custody.

The arrests came just two weeks after local councilors across Sumatra were sworn into office.

Padang Metropolitan Police Chief Ferry Harahap said the suspects include three members of the Mentawai Islands Legislative Council, along with a businessman.

"The anti-narcotics unit of the Padang Metropolitan Police received a tip-off and immediately launched an investigation. During the operation, we found a package of methamphetamine, which led us to a hotel where the suspects were arrested," Ferry said.

The suspects were identified by their initials: M (51) from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), S (55) from the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), MS (49) from the People's Conscience Party (Hanura), and AA (52), a contractor.

Urine tests confirmed that all four suspects tested positive for meth use. They face charges under the anti-narcotics law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years for illicit drug consumption.

Ferry added that the investigation is ongoing to identify the meth suppliers.
