Tjahjo Kumolo Outlaws Niqab in His Ministry
Jakarta. Staff employed by the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform may not wear the niqab, or full-face veil, while on duty, Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said on Monday.
However, he said other ministers and regional leaders were free to make their own rules in this regard.
"For me, if at the office, do not wear the niqab. If it is outside the office, wearing the niqab is each citizen's fashion right," Tjahjo said in Yogyakarta.
He said people working in his ministry were required to wear uniforms, as regulated.
Tjahjo added that he did not expect other government institutions to follow in his ministry's footsteps.
The issue of female public servants wearing the niqab came to the fore after Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi stated his opposition to visitors and staff wearing facial coverings at government offices.
