Jakarta. Hasyim Asy’ari, the chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU), was permanently dismissed by the Election Organizer Honorary Council (DKPP) on Wednesday after being found guilty of sexual abuse.

During the surprise announcement in Jakarta, the council referred to a sexual abuse complaint lodged by a woman against Hasyim on April 18.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, worked at KPU’s foreign mission.

“The DKPP declares that, firstly, it has accepted the complaint by the accuser in its entirety, and secondly, it imposes a permanent dismissal of the accused, KPU Chairman and Commissioner Hasyim Asy’ari, effective from today,” DKPP Head Heddy Lugito said.

The council formally requested President Joko Widodo to implement the ruling within a week.

The decision came just four months ahead of the simultaneous regional leader elections across the country.
