South Tangerang. Traffic mayhem continues this morning (16/05) after the collapse of pedestrian bridge along the BSD toll gate overnight shut down the major artery.

The Jakarta-Serpong toll road has been partially closed since Sunday night following the collapse of a pedestrian bridge after it was hit by a container truck carrying a crane. No injuries have been reported.

The incident occurred around 10.50 p.m. when the heavy-loaded truck passed the five-meter high pedestrian bridge which crosses above the toll road. The driver expected the truck to pass through smoothly, but the crane struck the bridge.

The bridge collapsed along both sides of the road, forcing police to close it down.

Following the incident, traffic mayhem was reported on Jalan Ciputat Raya heading to Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta which is an alternative road for cars in Serpong and BSD to reach Jakarta without using a toll road.

Jakarta Police traffic enforcement sub-unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Budiyanto said the traffic heading to Jakarta through Jakarta-Serpong toll road was diverted to the Jakarta-Merak toll road from the Alam Sutera toll. Car users are advised to head north via the Jalan Raya Serpong road to Alam Sutera.

Meanwhile, car users who have already entered Jakarta-Serpong toll road heading to Jakarta have been diverted through Jalan Cendrawasih, Jalan Merpati Raya, Jalan Aria Putra, Jalan Bukit Raya and Jalan Ciater to reach the Alam Sutera toll gate.

The Pondok Aren toll gate in Bintaro is operating as normal this morning.

Increased traffic has been reported on Jalan Graha Bintaro Raya this morning after car users from the BSD area chose non-toll roads to reach the Pondok Aren toll gate rather than become stuck on the Jakarta-Merak toll road.

"Even without the incident the Jakarta-Merak toll road is already heavily congested. It will take a lot of my time if I went through that lane in these conditions," 24-year-old car user Mira said.

Police are removing the collapsed bridge from the road this morning, however it remains unclear when the BSD toll gate will be operational again.
