Trains Canceled, Rail Bridge to Jakarta Airport Collapses After Heavy Rains, Landslides
Jakarta. Torrential rains in Jakarta and West Java on Monday (05/02) caused landslides on rail tracks and destroyed a rail bridge to the capital city's airport, officials said.
"A number of passenger and freight train schedules on the Bogor-Sukabumi [West Java] route were affected … by landslides blocking the rail track on Monday," a spokesman for railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Edy Kuswoyo, told the Jakarta Globe in a text message.
He said 10 trains were canceled due to landslides on the Cigombong-Cicurug and Batu Tulis-Maseng sections in Sukabumi.
A landslide in Bogor's hilly Puncak killed two people on Monday morning. Rescue operations will resume on Tuesday, Metro TV reported.
Airport Rail Bridge Collapses
On Monday afternoon, a rail bridge near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport collapsed because of the heavy rains, a spokesman for airport operator Angkasa Pura II, Yado Yarisman, said in a statement.
A car was buried under the bridge and rescuers struggled to remove it from the rubble.
"The airport train service has been temporarily suspended," Yado said.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) issued a flood warning for residents living on the banks of the Ciliwung River in Jakarta, as the Katulampa Dam in Bogor, near the river's source, is likely to overflow.
