Jakarta. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was joined by his wife and chairwoman of Jakarta's Family Welfare Empowerment Veronica Tan in launching TransJakarta's new female-only pink buses at City Hall on Thursday (21/04).

Veronica said she would happily take a ride on the bus, as it is part of a safety initiative for all Jakarta women.

“With the special buses for women, we are treated better. If us ladies are hesitant [to ride regular TransJakarta buses], she may take these buses instead,” said Veronica.

She added that the buses are still in limited supply, so those wanting to try may have to wait until more have hit the streets.

Basuki said he hoped women could feel comfortable on the regular service.

"We should realize that we are in a heterogeneous city. There are women hesitating to stand side-by-side with men. I hope all Jakarta regions may have the same [bus] service," he said.

The special buses will service Transjakarta's corridor 1 from Kota to Blok M from May, operating between 5.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.

The pink buses have a seating capacity of 38 and standing room for 80.
