Two Dead After Hurricanes Hit Yogyakarta, Jember
Jakarta. Hurricanes and heavy rains struck several areas in Central Java and East Java on Thursday (05/01), leaving two people dead and almost 300 homes destroyed.
A hurricane hit Yogyakarta at 2.00 p.m. on Thursday, destroying houses, cars and power lines, and plucking trees out of the ground.
Sleman, downtown Yogyakarta and Bantul suffered most of the damage, with one person killed and dozens of houses, trees, power lines, public facilities, roads and cars mangled by the storm.
Quick response teams from the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) have joined forces with the police, soldiers and volunteers to manage the recovery effort.
According to state news agency Antara, the district of Tegalrejo in Yogyakarta was also hit by hail storm on Thursday evening.
A hurricane also hit Jember in East Java at 2.00 p.m. on Thursday, leaving one person dead, ten injured and 287 homes destroyed.
The district of Pakusari absorbed most of the damage, where 25 homes completely collapsed and 240 others suffered serious damage.
BPBD Jember is still evacuating victims and providing other assistance in the area as of Friday morning.
"We've dropped in food supplies. Some of the residents have opened up their own soup kitchens with logistics provided by the BPBD and Social Services agency," an official said.
