Jakarta. Two active policemen handed themselves in to the police after confessing to their roles in the April 2017 acid attack on top anti-corruption investigator Novel Baswedan, Indonesian officials said on Friday.

The two reportedly police brigadiers have been named suspects and are now in custody. The National Police revealed their identities as R.M. and R.B.

"We have arrested two suspects [in the Novel case] who were taken to the Jakarta Police headquarters for interrogation," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Argo Yuwono told reporters in Jakarta.

They were named suspects in the morning and were interrogated later that afternoon, he said.

"The interrogation is still ongoing. They are officers of the National Police," Argo said.

Police sources said the officers were arrested at a place in Jalan Cimanggis, Depok, West Java, near a police station where they were stationed.

The Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud M.D. confirmed the two suspects had handed themselves in to the police.

He declined to elaborate on the details but praised the police for finally solving the high-profile case that had dragged on for more than two years.

Two men on a motorcycle hurled acid on Novel's face as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator walked back to his home in South Jakarta on April 11, 2017, after joining the dawn prayer at a nearby mosque.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had given until the end of the year for National Police Chief General Idham Azis to solve the case.
