Two Suspects Nabbed With 11 Kilos of Meth in West Kalimantan
Jakarta. Drug enforcement officers have arrested two alleged smugglers and confiscated 11 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine during a raid in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, an official said on Monday (27/03).
The two suspects, identified only by the initials G.U.S. (31) and W.A.H. (21), were arrested earlier this month when they were reportedly about to hand the drugs over to a 50-year-old buyer, identified only by the initial A.
Officers of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) shot the latter dead when he attempted to flee. The remaining suspects have allegedly been involved in at least 11 drug transactions so far this year, an initial investigation found.
"Their actions were coordinated by a syndicate, led by another suspect, Y.U.D, who remains at large," BNN chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso told reporters at his office in East Jakarta.
"Both suspects were drug couriers who smuggled the crystal methamphetamine from Kuching and Sarawak in Malaysia to Pontianak through Entikong," Budi said.
BNN officers also confiscated a car, a motorcycle and nine cell phones from the suspects, who may face the death penalty if convicted.
The authorities have uncovered more than 650 cases of drug smuggling across Indonesia and confiscated more than 2,000 kilograms of illegal substances between 2014 and 2017, government data shows.
There were an estimated 5.9 million drug abusers in the country in November 2015, according to BNN data.
