Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka Welcomes Legal Challenges

Jakarta. Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka has responded to the legal action taken by the legal team of presidential candidates Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan, filed at the Constitutional Court (MK) on Saturday.
In the lawsuit, Ganjar's team requested the disqualification of presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Gibran, and called for a rerun of the election. Gibran, in turn, expressed his openness to anyone wishing to file a lawsuit.
"If there are any objections, there are already established procedures. Please, go ahead (file a lawsuit)," Gibran told reporters at Solo City Hall on Monday.
Addressing Anies Baswedan's legal team, who sought a rerun of the election without his involvement, Gibran highlighted the need to respect the established mechanisms.
"For example, if there's a rerun and their candidate loses, what then? Do they request another rerun until they win? Once again, if there are any objections, please go through the established channels. Yes, there are mechanisms in place," he concluded.
The legal dispute stems from a challenge to Gibran's candidacy based on a controversial Constitutional Court ruling that amended the minimum age requirement of 40 years old. Gibran, aged 37, became eligible to contest after the court made an exception for candidates who have served or are serving in elected public office. The ruling, issued by a panel presided over by Constitutional Court Chief Justice Anwar Usman, sparked controversy due to Usman's familial relationship with President Joko Widodo. Following an ethics tribunal finding Usman in violation of ethics, a new chief justice was appointed.
Yusril Ihza Mahendra, who leads Prabowo’s legal team, characterized the motion as a challenge to the Constitutional Court's ruling itself.
"If they dispute Mr. Gibran’s candidacy due to the Constitutional Court ruling, they are not actually regarding the KPU (General Election Com and [Prabowo] as the defendants. They are challenging the Constitutional Court head-on," Yusril said.
