VP-Elect Gibran Denies Brother's Private Jet Trip is Linked to Shopee Deal

Jakarta. Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka has rejected claims that his younger brother, Kaesang Pangarep, received a private jet trip to the US as a form of gratification from the e-commerce giant Shopee.
Gibran emphasized that the collaboration between the Solo City Government, Solo TechnoPark, and Shopee was handled professionally. He clarified that Kaesang’s use of a private jet had no connection with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shopee, which focused on establishing an office and gaming center on land provided by the Solo City Government.
On Dec. 6, 2021, Shopee inaugurated the Shopee Solo Creative & Innovation Hub at Solo Technopark. This hub is designed to support young people in Central Java by fostering networking and innovation to boost economic recovery.
"It's not true. You're mistaken. The MoU is a professional agreement between the Solo City Government, Solo TechnoPark, and Shopee. There's nothing like that," he told reporters.
Gibran also urged caution against spreading unfounded rumors. "Be careful with your reporting," he warned.
The allegations surfaced after the Anti-Corruption Society of Indonesia (MAKI) reported a potential conflict of interest. A video circulated on social media showing Kaesang Pangarep and his wife, Erina Gudono, using a Gulfstream G650 private jet with flight number N588SE on a trip to the United States. This jet is reportedly owned by Garena Online, a company under Sea Limited, which also owns Shopee.
MAKI had submitted documents related to the MoU between the Solo City Government and Shopee International Indonesia to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), noting that Gibran was the mayor of Solo at the time.
Gibran also declined to address similar allegations involving his brother-in-law, Bobby Nasution.
