We Have to Collaborate Across Borders to Create Political Stability: British Ambassador
Jakarta. British Ambassador Moazzam Malik on Thursday (09/02) encouraged international cooperation among governments and citizens, amid uncertainties on the global scene.
Speaking at the launch of the Chevening Alumni Association in Indonesia at Le Meridien Hotel in Jakarta, the ambassador expressed his belief in collaboration across borders.
"As we navigate our way through the uncertainties this year, and the year ahead, we'll see what happens. But one thing that is self-evidently true is that to deal with the international problems that we face we have to work together," Malik said.
He added that international cooperation is not limited to what governments do, but is more about the people-to-people relations. He referred to friendships and cooperation among citizens across borders as relationships that sustain themselves over many years and often translate into good things, such as research and businesses activities.
"We have to collaborate across borders, learn from each other, if we're really going to create political stability and prosperity that more people around the world deserve," Malik said.
Chevening scholarships are the United Kingdom's government global scholarship program, which has been running for over 30 years. Thursday saw the launch of the Indonesian chapter of the scholarship's alumni association, which aims to develop further its alumni network and strengthen the UK-Indonesia relations.
According to Malik, the Chevening scholarships are an investment into Indonesia's future. With the country setting out to increase development and welfare of its people, education plays a crucial role in determining the future of the nation.
"The make or break factor is whether the human resources are able to unlock Indonesia's potential," Malik said, referring to the Chevening scholarships as one of the pathways to ensure development of human resources in Indonesia.
