Wiranto Recovers, Eager to Join Cabinet Meeting

OCTOBER 11, 2019

Jakarta. Chief Security Minister Wiranto is recovering at the hospital a day after he was stabbed by an Islamic militant during a visit to Pandeglang, Banten, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Friday.

The president paid a visit to Wiranto for the second time at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Central Jakarta, accompanied by State Secretary Pratikno and presidential staff Ali Mochtar Ngabalin.

"He is getting stable and recovering. I have communicated with him and he said 'I want to go home soon and join meetings,'" Jokowi told reporters at the hospital.

The president said he had instructed National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian to increase security for state officials to prevent a repeat of the incident.

“I ordered the police chief yesterday to increase security for state officials, to ensure that what happened to Mr. Wiranto will never happen again," he said.

Agum Gumelar, a member of the Presidential Advisory Board, also visited Wiranto and had a chance to talk with his fellow retired army general.

"He is improving. I talked to him and he could respond clearly, although with a low voice," Agum said.

Police have arrested Syahril Alamsyah, alias Abu Rara, 31, who carried out the attack, and his wife Fitri Andriana, 21, who was also present at the scene.

Police believe they are members of the Islamic State-affiliated Jamaah Ansharut Daulah terror group.
