Wushu Athlete Wins Indonesia's First Asian Games Silver
Jakarta. Indonesia's wushu athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo won the country's first silver medal in the Asian Games men's changquan final in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Sunday (19/08).
Edgar scored 9.72, just slightly below Chinese athlete Sun Peiyuan who gained 9.75. Taiwanese Tsai Tesmin won the bronze with a score of 9.70.
"I present this medal to Indonesia, to my parents, my family and everyone else," Edgar said, as quoted in a statement issued by the Ministry of Sports.
The 19-year-old athlete won a bronze medal at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and a silver medal in the men's daoshu at the 2017 Wushu World Championship in Kazan, Russia.
Edgar said the intensive four months of training in China helped him prepare for the competition.
Head coach Novianti said Edgar's performance was beyond expectation.
"What Edgar has achieved is beyond expectation, this is his gift to our nation on our 73rd anniversary of independence," Novianti said.
"Hopefully Edgar's achievement will motivate other Indonesian athletes," President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said in a tweet.
