Jakarta. Paying for your passport could be a bit of a chore since after submitting all the complicated paperwork at the Immigration Office, you still have to find an ATM or a post office to wire the fee. But you can now wave goodbye to all that inconvenience, and simply use the Tokopedia, Bukalapak or Finnet apps on your smartphone to make the payment.
"The Immigration Office is transforming its services by using more digital technology, including allowing the use of online payment services to pay for your passport fee," Sam Fernando, a spokesman for the immigration department at the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, said in a statement on Sunday.
Passport application is the most-accessed service from the Immigration Office.
Tokopedia is Indonesia's largest e-commerce platform, while Bukalapak, another e-commerce platform, is one of the country's four unicorn startups. Finnet is an online payment service operating as a subsidiary of Indonesia's largest telecommunication company, Telkom Indonesia.
"The decision to use Tokopedia, Bukalapak and Finnet to pay for a variety of services from the Immigration Office, including passport application, was made by the Finance Ministry," Sam said.
Foreign citizens can also use the online platforms to pay for their residence permit.
The Indonesian government began migrating more of its services online since President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo took office in 2014 and immediately rolled out his single window policy to cut bureaucratic red tape.
