5.6-Magnitute Earthquake Hits Banten's Pandeglang, Tremor Felt in Jakarta

Jakarta. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck near Pandeglang district in Banten province on Saturday night, with tremors felt in Jakarta, 100 kilometers to the east.

The quake's epicenter was 77 kilometers southeast of Pandeglang, according to the weather and geophysics agency , or BMKG. The agency reported that the quake struck at 9:47 p.m.

The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

"The quake felt strongly in several areas," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

People in Pandeglang, Lebak, southern Sukabumi and Cianjur felt a hard jolt for four to six seconds. People were panicking and rushed outside their houses.

"There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake," he added.
