Jakarta. An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Dompu district in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Monday morning (01/08), the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, has reported. No fatalities were recorded.

According to the agency's earthquake and tsunami center head Mochammad Riyadi, the quake struck at 6.40 a.m., with an epicenter 63 kilometers in the sea west of Dompu at a depth of 18 kilometers. Three aftershocks followed with magnitudes of 3.5, 3.4 and 2.5 on the Richter scale.

Tremors were recorded at the agency's quake monitoring posts in Mataram, Denpasar and Nusa Dua. The agency said the quake was caused by seismic activities in the Flores back-arc.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said strong tremors from the quake caused some panic among Dompu residents, forcing some of them to flee their homes.
