Agus Yudhoyono Tops Approval Ratings for Jakarta Governor

NOVEMBER 29, 2016

Jakarta. Jakarta governor nominee and son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, is leading in the poll against the two other contenders — incumbent Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and former education minister Anies Baswedan — three months out from February's gubernatorial election, a survey released on Tuesday (29/11) found.

The poll was the third in the last two weeks that showed the former Army mayor and his running mate Sylviana Murni leading the other pairings Ahok-Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Anies-Sandiaga Uno.

Agus-Sylvi's approval rating is currently at 29.5 percent, according to the survey that was conducted by Jakarta-based Charta Politika between Nov. 17 and 24 and involved 733 respondents.

Ahok-Djarot had an approval rating of 28.9 percent and and Anies-Sandiaga 26.7 percent, the survey also showed, with 14.9 percent saying they were still undecided.

"The margins are very slight. All the nominees still have pretty much the same chance to go through to the second round [of the election]," Charta Politika director Yunarto Wijaya said at the survey's release.

The Charta Politika survey is claimed to have a 3.5 percent margin of error.

The three most common reasons respondents cited for favoring Agus were resoluteness (23.1 percent), good looks (19.4 percent) and charisma (11.1 percent).

A survey released by Poltracking on Sunday showed a 27.9 percent approval rating for Agus-Sylvi, followed by Ahok-Djarot with 22 percent and Anies-Sandiaga with 20.4 percent.

Another survey released by Indonesian Political Indicator on Thursday showed Agus-Sylvi ahead in the poll with 30.4 percent, followed by Ahok-Djarot and then Anies-Sandiaga with 26.2 percent and 24.5 percent respectively.
