Jakarta. The National Narcotics Agency, or BNN, has called on heightening actions against narcotics crime, including the abuse and illegal distribution of drugs during the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Thursday (23/06).

In its official statement, BNN chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso said the fatality of the illegal drugs might result in the "lost generation," which would prevent the further development of Indonesia.

The organized, cross-country crime has caused heavy losses in the health, socio-economic and security sectors.

According to BNN, global communities have sustainably applied various efforts to prevent illicit trafficking of narcotics, initiated by the United Nations Office on Drugs Crime (UNODC).

The Indonesian government, through BNN, has used the international day as momentum to remind the public on the danger of narcotics to the state.

“The increasing numbers of victims and smarter syndicates have prompted officials — and the public — to be aware in repelling illegal drugs distribution,” the statement said.

BNN as the leading sector in overcoming drug issues in Indonesia have been committed to increase efforts to prevent narcotics distribution by involving all public elements, including a central and regional campaign “STOPnarkoba!” or STOP narcotics, including informational education on various social functions.

The campaign is aligned with UNDOC after initiating the commemoration of the international day, with a “Listen First : Listening to Children and Youth is The First Step To Help Them Grow Healthy and Safe” event, urging preventative measures focusing on children and youths.

The peak of the celebration will be held in Kota Tua, West Jakarta, on Sunday (26/06), where President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to give awards to anti-drugs activists.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking commemorates the agreement of member countries to embody a drug-free global community.
