Cars Set Alight in Central Jakarta Ahead of Rally

Jakarta. Two cars were set alight in Central Jakarta's Gambir in the early hours of Saturday (11/02) after a group of people reportedly threw a molotov cocktail into one of them, a police spokesman said.

No casualties have been reported in the incident, which occurred just hours before hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta and its surroundings to attend a mass prayer-cum-rally.

A witness said four people on two motorcycles passed by Toyota Vios and Honda CR-V, one of them smashed Toyota's front window and threw the bottle bomb into the car.

The four fled the scene as fire swept through the cars, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said, adding that investigators are trying to identify the perpetrators.

"Gambir Police officers are handling the case," he said, adding that firefighters immediately arrived at the scene to put out the blaze.
