Jakarta. A court in Tangerang, Banten, has handed down a death sentence to a 22-year-old Chinese man for smuggling nearly 90 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

The panel of judges at the Tangerang District Court on Wednesday (04/05) found the man, Ng Ka Fung, guilty of violating the 2009 narcotics law.

"The defendant is sentenced to death as he is convincingly proven to have violated Indonesian law for possessing 88 kilograms of narcotics," presiding judge Nirwana said, as quoted by Tempo.co.

The verdict matched the prosecutors' demand.

Authorities arrested Ka Fung in August last year at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after discovering 88 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, or "sabu" as it is called in Indonesia, in his suitcase.

This came after three other Chinese nationals were apprehended for similar offenses.

Authorities also confiscated three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine that month from Chiu Wing Sin and Yuen Ming Chun Billy following their arrival at the airport from Guangzhou.

A man named Pak Chi Pang was later arrested at an apartment in Jakarta after 94 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and more than 100,000 ecstacy pills were found inside his home.
