Dozens Injured as Earthquake Jolts Sorong
Sorong, West Papua. A 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Sorong in West Papua on Friday at 1:06 a.m. local time, officials said, sending people rushing into the streets and injuring dozens.
Deny Putirai, the head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Manokwari, the provincial capital, said the quake's epicenter was located at sea, 31 kilometers northeast of Sorong at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Deny added there was no risk of a tsunami, but warned residents to remain alert for aftershocks.
“According to the data from the disaster mitigation agencies [BPBD] in Sorong and Raja Ampat, 62 people were injured and approximately 200 houses were damaged in this catastrophe,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Friday.
Victims were receiving treatment in a Sorong hospital and emergency posts have also been set up.
