Celebrating 65 Years of Diplomatic Ties, Indonesia and Russia Vow to Boost Cooperation
Jakarta. In celebration of the 65th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations on Tuesday, President Joko Widodo and President Vladimir Putin have agreed to intensify cooperation between the two countries.
Diplomatic relations grow stronger on the basis of mutual respect and understanding, Joko said on Tuesday as part of an exchange of messages with his Russian counterpart.
"This 65th anniversary should be the moment for both countries to improve bilateral cooperation that has been developing well all this time," Joko added.
"Russia is ready to build an even more constructive cooperation. Our main interest is to guarantee the stability and security of the Asia Pacific," Putin said.
Indonesia and what was then the Soviet Union established diplomatic ties on Feb. 3, 1950.
In recent years, Russia has supplied the Indonesian military with various weapons systems, including Sukhoi jet fighters, and last month the country sent a team to assist in the search for the black boxes of AirAsia flight QZ8501. The plane crashed in the sea off Central Kalimantan, killing all on board.
