Indonesian Women Told to Embody National Culture Ahead of Kartini Day
Jakarta. Hanifah Ferry Mursyidan Baldan, the head of the agriculture ministry's employee association, reminded Indonesian women to always embody the national culture with pride. She made her remark in light of the coming Kartini Day, which celebrates Indonesian women's achievements.
Hanifah said more women should wear locally produced traditional clothing, such as Indonesian batik and songket, which she believes to be as good, if not better, than imported clothing.
"We should show more love for Indonesian products. We can combine so many different crafts in one product, like batik or songket weaving," Hanifah said in a statement on Monday (18/04).
A fashion show featuring traditional Indonesian wear will take place during Kartini Day celebrations on Thursday, along with a cooking competition featuring traditional cuisine.
Hanifah said the activities will help raise awareness of traditional fashion and cuisine from all over the archipelago.
"Kartini is still a source of inspiration for Indonesian women. She is an inspiration for us to bring innovative ideas into fashion and cooking, and for us to love Indonesian products more," Hanifah said.
National Craft Council chairwoman Mufidah Jusuf Kalla said Kartini Day commemorates a national heroine who was well-mannered, educated, visionary and pro-gender equality.
"Kartini was an intelligent woman, who stood for gender equality and actively fought for independence and helped build our nation," said Mufidah, who is the wife of Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
According to her, Kartini inspires through her writing, which encourages women to be intelligent, independent and a tower of strength for their families.
