Police to Step Up Security at Major Houses of Worship Over Long Weekend

MAY 04, 2016

Jakarta. Police will be heightening security at major houses of worship in Jakarta this long weekend to prevent possible acts of terrorism, one of the capital's top cops said on Wednesday (04/05).

The public holidays will start on Thursday, when the Ascension of Jesus Christ is observed, and continue the next day with a commemoration of the Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad.

As many as 276 members of the security forces will be deployed at the Jakarta Cathedral and the Immanuel Church, respectively, while 450 officers will secure the Istiqlal Mosque. All three are located in Central Jakarta.

"We have been conducting early detection of any possible security threats," Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Nandang Jumantara said. "We keep monitoring the development of terrorist networks."

"Hopefully members of the public will be able to safely participate in their religious activities," Nandang added.

The personnel securing the houses of worship form part of the 6,295 that will be deployed to deal with the anticipated traffic congestion and to secure several popular holiday destinations in Jakarta over the long weekend.
