Jakarta. Two civilians are confirmed to have died when an Indonesian Air Force training aircraft crashed into a housing area in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday morning (10/02), local authorities confirmed.

Malang Deputy Mayor Sutiaji confirmed that two residents of Blimbing subdistrict were killed in the incident.

The first victim was 47-year-old woman, identified as Erna Wahyuningtyas, according to Sutiaji.

“The other victim was identified as Nurcholis, 27-year-old man, who rented a room at the same house [where Erna lived],” Sutiaji said at Saiful Anwar Hospital in Malang, as reported by Metrotvnews.com.

Conditions of the pilot, Maj. Ifi Safatilah, and flight engineer Saiful remain unclear, although some media reports claim Ifi perished in the crash while the body of her engineer could not be located.

Abdul Rachman Saleh Air Force Base commander Col. Djoko Senoputro said the crash occurred during a flight test after a routine maintenance on the aircraft.

"The aircraft was running a test flight at 25,000 feet and then descended to 15,000 ft. After the pilot requested clearance to descent to 8,000 ft, we lost contact with the aircraft. Ten minutes later, the aircraft reportedly crashed into a house," Djoko said during a live phone interview with BeritaSatu TV.

The incident occurred at 10.45 a.m. local time, 45 minutes after the Brazillian-made aircraft took off for the test flight.

An eyewitness said the light attack and trainer aircraft was climbing before it plunged in a residential area, emitting thick smoke and a gasoline smell upon impact.

Medical personnel and rescue officials dispatched to the scene of the crash on Jalan Laksda Adisucipto in the city's Blimbing subdistrict, some 15 kilometers from the Abdul Rachman Saleh Air Force base.

The air force said it would conduct an investigation into the crash, the latest of several military aviation accidents.

In December last year two pilots were killed when a military plane crashed in Central Java while performing maneuvers.  In June a Hercules C-130 crashed into a residential neighborhood in Medan, North Sumatra, killing 142 people and causing widespread destruction.
